Does it get any better than this? As I hinted on the air, marking the approximate 30th anniversaries of a pair seminal rock albums, both Rush and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame will be descending on Chicago this summer for Loop shows that will have fans of both bands in a certain frenzy.

Rush will play Charter One Pavilion July 5th and perform their classic "Moving Pictures" album in it's entirety for the very first time, as well as a set of their hits. Dubbed "The Time Machine Tour", it will once again be an evening with Rush - no opening act needed.

Nearly a decade after they split, Stone Temple Pilots made a triumphant return to Chicago this past weekend in support of their forthcoming reunion album "Stone Temple Pilots" set for release May 25th. Miraculously, Alice In Chains seem poised to pull off the most difficult and improbable rock tale, the likes of which we have not seen since AC/DC resurrected themselves after losing Bon Scott and somehow managed to become even bigger in the process. After singer Layne Staley passed away in 2002, most would have been forgiven for believing Alice In Chains were finished. Defiantly, they have found new life in lead vocalist William Duvall and are arguable producing some of their finest music and live shows ever. This past Saturday night, they demonstrated their masterful skill at moving on and yet still connecting with their illustrious past before a delirious, sold out Loop crowd at the Aragon Ballroom.

Last week, Chicago's adopted sons Tesla tore through town for another sold out show at the House Of Blues. The recent Olympic USA vs. Canada gold medal hockey game turned out to be such a huge hit, NBC replayed it not once, but 4 times this past week! Featuring no less than four Blackhawks, it got me to thinking about our friendly, sibling sporting rivalry with our Canadian neighbors to the north. Despite a heartbreaking 3-2 loss for Team U.S.A. in overtime to Canada, the men's Olympic gold medal hockey game will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most intense and exciting games of all time. An instant classic, it rivals the 1980 "Miracle On Ice" and the 1972 Canada vs. Russia series in importance to the development of the sport of hockey. For those who hadn't been hockey fans before, this game will be remembered as a defining moment in the hockey world, just as the "Greatest Game Ever Played" was to the NFL in 1958. Best of all, the game featured no less than 4 current Chicago Blackhawks players; Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. This could very well be the year the Blackhawks win their first Stanley Cup since 1961. They certainly now have the talent to do it.

The 2010 Chicago Auto Show was another rousing success for sports car enthusiasts. Rather than the usual display of awe-inspiring concept cars, the focus this year (due to the economy) was mostly on wild new paint/color schemes and bigger engines with more horsepower and better fuel economy for the already existing Corvette, Challenger, Camaro and Mustang models. Shocking news that the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London may end up being sold off by EMI Records who are looking to raise much needed cash. A mecca for music fans, the British government are eyeing the prize hopefully meaning that the studios may finally be accessible to the public. Up until now, access to the legendary studios where The Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2 and many others recorded has been strictly off-limits. If my experiences and access there this past fall could be granted to others, it would most certainly be the source of dizzying interest and revenue for the new owners. Here's hoping.

Speaking of under-appreciated bands, lead singer/rhythm guitarist Doug Fieger of Detroit's The Knack passed away this weekend at the age of only 57 after a long battle with brain and lung cancer. Doug and the band effortlessly churned out numerous catchy-as-hell rock/pop masterpieces over the years. Here's hoping he and The Knack get their just due now.

Despite the fact that the Chicago Bears weren't a part of Superbowl XLIV (44), it was nonetheless mandatory viewing for music fans. Sunday's game completed an herculean effort started 5 years ago to feature the music of what is referred to as the "Holy Trinity" of '60's British rock: The Beatles, Rolling Stones and The Who. Much like Paul McCartney and the Stones before them, The Who performed some of their biggest songs in their 12 minute spotlight during the halftime spectacle.

It's only fitting that Great White should make one of their now rare live appearances here in Chicago this Friday night at the House Of Blues. What we now know as "rock music" was born in Chicago some 50 years ago as hard-nosed, electrified blues. Those early rock pioneers (Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, etc.) influenced the next generation of blues-rock fans (The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, etc.), who then in turn influenced the next generation (AC/DC, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, etc.), who then influenced the next generation (Cinderella, The Black Crowes, Great White, etc.), with no end in sight. Wildly underrated, Great White puts on a terrific show that promises be a be a fitting homage to the birthplace of it all.

It all started in Chicago at the Loop sponsored "Chicagofest" held at Navy Pier on August 10, 1979, says Klaus Meine of the Scorpions. Klaus and the band credit the Loop and that gig for breaking them in America. Three decades later, the Scorpions have sadly announced their retirement. After the release of what will be their final studio album "Sting In The Tail" next month and one last "victory lap" world tour which will include a final stop in Chicago, it appears it's all over for the Scorpions.

It was always our pleasure, our purpose in life, our passion and we were fortunate enough to make music for you - whether it was live on stage or in the studio, creating new songs.

While we were working on our album these past few months, we could literally feel how powerful and creative our work was – and how much fun we were still having, in the process. But there was also something else: We want to end the Scorpion’s extraordinary career on a high note. We are extremely grateful for the fact that we still have the same passion for music we’ve always had since the beginning. This is why, especially now, we agree we have reached the end of the road. We finish our career with an album we consider to be one of the best we have ever recorded and with a tour that will start in our home country Germany and take us to five different continents over the next few years.

We want you, our fans, to be the first to know about this. Thank you for your never-ending support throughout the years!

If you think his song "Crazy Train" was a show-biz exaggeration, you ought to read his tome. He really should have called it "I Am Ozzy... And I Should Be Dead By Now!" Hysterically funny and heartwarming at the same time, you'll wonder how he has managed to dodge the Grim Reaper time and time again. I highly recommend it. Ozzy also mentioned that his still untitled new album and summer tour plans are being finished up as we spoke. Keep it locked on the Loop to hear the new Ozzy and when he will be back in town to play live.

Footnote: the Megadeth/Slayer/Testament show scheduled for this Friday night (2/5) at the UIC Pavillion has been rescheduled for August 20th due to Slayer singer-bassist Tom Araya's neck surgery. This week marks the 30th anniversary of a by now legendary Loop show featuring The Who live at the old International Amphitheatre on December 8th, 1979. The band's first tour after the death of their incendiary drummer Keith Moon (who was the inspiration for the Muppets character "Animal") and only days after the Cincinnati tragedy, it was a pivotal moment for the godfathers of punk. Long bootlegged, a majority of this must-see show has finally been officially released on DVD as part of the special 3-disc "Amazing Journey: The Story Of The Who" documentary exclusively available at Best Buy. This Tuesday (December 8th) at 7:30am, I will be playing a two-fer from the show to commemorate the occasion.

Incredibly, KISS may very well be bigger and better than ever. Laying down the blue-print for bombastic, over the top rock spectacles back in the 1970's (and thereby making it nearly impossible for any band before or since to even approximate the level of sensory overload and back-for-your-buck a KISS show delivers), the guys made good on their threat to up the ante. As they detailed when they appeared on my show leading up to Friday night at the United Center, they somehow managed to squeeze more lights, more pyro, bigger video screens, better sound and more tricks into their by now already classic, jaw-dropping onslaught. With a stunning new hit record "Sonic Boom" in the charts, it was like the Fourth Of July, Halloween and a deranged Ringling Brothers Circus colliding... on "11." An all-encompassing triumph.

Accepting the daunting task of opening the show, Buckcherry ferociously attacked the job at hand with a strut and swagger of their own, making impressive gains in their ultimate goal to be the next generation of arena masters.

Earlier in the week saw a duo of rock front men stepping out on their own at the House Of Blues.

Monday night, the iconic and original angry young man Roger Daltrey of The Who performed a warm up gig in preparation for an upcoming Who record and world tour. Daltrey, who helped lay down the golden god/hard rock front man template (Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin even "borrowed" some of Roger's late 60's look and welded it to Steve Marriott's vocal stylings) was in rare form. With a crack-ass band featuring Simon Townshend on guitar who moves, sounds and looks just like his older brother Pete in tow, Roger looked and sounded great ... and is still his delightfully feisty self, telling off some self absorbed boors who were loudly interrupting his performance.

Several days prior, a rare pairing of Queensryche and Lita Ford rocked the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet. Coming off a 20 year hiatus, Lita slipped right back into the saddle.

Despite the fact that Chicago has far more legitimate claims as the birthplace of rock 'n roll than New York, that is where the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame organizers have seen fit to hold most of their ceremonies and concerts over the last 25 years. This past weekend was no exception. That aside, it was again a once-in-a-lifetime type of musical event. Marking the 25th anniversary of the Hall, the concert featured numerous unlikely to be repeated pairings. Where else could you catch Ozzy Osbourne and Ray Davies of the Kinks fronting Metallica? Or Mick Jagger jamming with U2?

Earlier in the week, Foreigner played a sold-out show here in Chicago at the House Of Blues with it's own touch of history. Playing all of their massive hits as well as their latest offerings, it was received with deafening approval.

Little known, but Foreigner founder Mick Jones found himself in the middle of a historically monumental three week residency in early 1964 as one of the opening acts for the Beatles in Paris. Mere days before their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show (indeed, they learned their single "I Want To Hold Your Hand" has gone #1 in the US while still in Paris), the Beatles were on the precipice of unprecedented world-wide fame and popularity. A wide-eyed 19 year old English guitarist for French chanteuse Sylvie Vartan at the time, Mick befriended the four lads from Liverpool over their shared run of shows at the Olympia Theatre just before such a thing would become impossible again for all concerned. Over the years. Mick and I talked many times about those days which never failed to bring a far-away gleam to his eye, a giggle and a goofy grin to his face. Long ago giving up on the idea that somehow there was any recorded evidence of those concerts, he nearly leapt through the phone when I told him a few weeks ago that I had tracked down footage of the shows, including himself on stage. He literally pleaded with me to show him the film when he got to Chicago. While he and Foreigner finished up their set, I employed the services of their tour manager to help me surprise Mick with the find as he came off stage. To say he was delirious to finally see it would be putting it mildly.

The legacies of the Loop, the city of Chicago and it's legendary music scene converged in a historic celebration Friday night at the House Of Blues. As soon as I took the stage to greet the sold-out crowd of Loyal Loopers and introduce UFO on stage, I sensed that we were in for a special night. The electricity in the room was palpable. One of Chicago's favorite bands UFO were back in town and unbeknownst to the crowd, the members of Metallica had quietly snuck in to catch the performance as well. Long time UFO fanatics, they were just as excited to be there as the rest of the audience. Backstage just prior, UFO drummer Andy Parker emerged from the restroom beaming. He had on the classic black Loop t-shirt he had asked me for last year. He became increasingly animated as he told me how big a fan he was of the Loop ("I've got the Loop sticker on my truck and I wore my old Loop shirt till it was in TATTERS!") and how he couldn't wait to wear his new Loop shirt on stage that night. When the crowd caught sight of us approaching the stage, they erupted. Feeding off the frenzy, UFO then proceeded to tear the roof off the place. Another bombastic show befitting their iconic status.

Backstage after the show, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett was eagerly telling UFO singer Phil Mogg that he was one of his all-time favorite vocalists and how legendary the Loop was when he caught sight of me. Grinning, he bounded over and began reminiscing with me about the crazy times we had shared in the past.

It was truly a memorable night for all. Here's hoping UFO returns to their second home soon... special things seem to happen.
